As the incoming President of ICF-Long Island, it is my great honor to welcome you to our website and to introduce you to our organization.

As we usher in the new year of 2017 with a mixture of emotions, we can all feel very optimistic about the role of professional coaching throughout the world in the coming year, and in the years to come. The International Coach Federation (ICF-Global) is taking the lead throughout the world in establishing and maintaining very high standards of ethical and professional behavior for the coaching profession. At the same time, our local chapter of the International Coach Federation, ICF-Long Island, is committed to maintaining our long-standing tradition of being a valuable source of information and service to the Long Island community.

Entering the new year, we are also committed to reaching out to a wider constituency, to encourage more of our fellow coaches to join with us, to fulfill our shared need for camaraderie, continuing education, and collaboration. We are also committed to taking an even more active role than we have previously in educating people in the wider community about the tremendous value of professional coaching, both personally and organizationally. Ultimately, we hope that the services of our professional coaches will be sought after and appreciated by a growing segment of our neighbors, so that more individuals and more organizations can enhance their development and benefit from what the uniquely powerful coaching experience can provide.

I want to express my heartfelt appreciation to Maribeth Kraus, our Immediate Past-President, who has provided us with amazing leadership, persistence, diligence, and wisdom during her tenure as President over the past couple of years, and whose continued presence will undoubtedly help me greatly as I take over the position of President. I also want to thank Barbara Kessler, who has served on our Executive Board for many years as our Treasurer and Compliance Officer, and who has worked tirelessly, on so many levels, to ensure that ICF-Long Island was able to not only survive but thrive through an ongoing process of change; Barbara has moved from Nassau to Philadelphia, but has remained an integral and essential part of our Board.

There are several new additions to our Board. Ronit Hakimi has volunteered to fill Barbara’s shoes as Treasurer (not an easy task), while Maryann Hennessey and Lois Cooper have both stepped up to take over the challenges of bringing in excellent programming/training for our monthly meetings. I feel very blessed to have them, along with the other wonderful and hardworking members of the Board, namely Mindy Stern, John Little, and Joshua Lissauer, serving alongside me.

I hope that everyone had a wonderful Passover and Easter with family and friends.

 

New Membership Due Date

The ICF-Long Island board voted to have the membership year begin on September 1 starting this coming September.  Having everyone’s membership begin at the same time will make it easier for all.  Those of you who pay or have paid earlier than September 2015 will have their dues prorated.  We hope that this new policy will make things easier for our members.

 

Benefits of ICF-LI’s Alliance with ICF Global 

Since we have become more closely aligned with ICF global good things are happening for our chapter.  We have received a $500 marketing subsidy which was used towards the cost of the chapter’s new website (www.ICF-LI.com) 

Please visit the website and see all the exciting new changes.

 

We are also receiving a rebate for those who pay the activity fee and are members of ICF global to help us build up our chapter.  This subsidy will end on December 31, 2015, unless we have 50 members of ICF global in our chapter.  I urge you to join ICF global.  There are benefits for you as well as your chapter.

 

For example: 

–         being able to obtain a well-recognized accreditation (ACC, PCC, MCC), which is important for your success and the success of your business.

–         access to research on various areas of coaching

–         peer to peer coaching opportunity to help you build the required coaching hours towards you ACC, PCC and MCC and to improve your knowledge and practice of coaching

 

Northeast Regional Advisory Council

In June 2014, ICF Chapter Leaders from across the Northeast Region met for the first time with the objective of sharing best practices, networking, and exploring the value of creating an on-going forum for regional coordination and communication, and to better define an organizing structure for the chapters in the region.

The idea is to create a small, agile, effective council made up from Past Presidents of member chapters.  Since current Presidents need to be focused and occupied with their chapter responsibilities,  it seemed that Past Presidents would have more time to focus on regional issues.  They understand the particular needs of chapter presidents, and having them involved at the Regional level ensures continuity and expansive knowledge sharing

The purpose of the Northeast RAC (based on recommendations presented at the June Chapter Leaders Meeting) is the following:

·        Share lessons and best/transferable practices across chapters

·        Promote the growth and development of our members and chapter leaders

·        Build community and support for current, former and incoming chapter leaders

·        Leverage the knowledge and talents of each chapter for the common good

·        Represent regional needs and issues to ICF Global

 

Our own Josephine Rotolo is part of the initial group working on developing this council.  As the Northeast Regional Advisory Council becomes more developed, I will keep you informed about their ideas and how these ideas will benefit our chapter.

February 2015 President’s Letter

The days are getting longer and, hopefully, the weather will be getting milder soon.  Buy flowers for your home and office and think warm thoughts.  Last month I spoke about our new relationship with the International Coach Federation global office.  Now I’d like to speak about the first of the new benefits and changes that are happening.  

We have heard your request for lower fees for our monthly meetings.  While we wanted to provide lower meeting fees, your board also wanted to provide a light dinner.  We developed and approved the following new monthly meeting fees beginning with our March meeting.

Voting and Associate Members will pay an Early Bird Monthly Meeting Fee of $20.   and a Regular Fee of $30.  In order to obtain the benefit of an Early Bird Fee, the $20 must be paid either through Pay Pal or by check to the Treasurer, Barbara Kessler by the Sunday night before the meeting date.

Voting and Associate Members who pay late (after the Sunday night before the meeting date) will pay $30.

Affiliates (ICF Global Members who have not paid the chapter activity fee) will pay $35.

 

Nonmembers will continue to pay $45.

We will provide a light dinner of sandwiches and salad plus dessert, water, coffee and tea; however, in order to lower the meeting fees, we will not be able to provide hot entrees.

So that you better understand the new levels of participation in the ICF-Long Island chapter that was previously called the Long Island Coaching Alliance, they are outlined below.

–          Members – voting members who are ICF Global members and who have paid the activity for the ICF-Long Island chapter events.

–          Associates – those who have paid the ICF-Long Island chapter activity fee only

–          Affiliates – those who are ICF Global members only and who have not paid the ICF-Long Island chapter activity fee

–          Nonmembers – those who are free to attend our mnthly meetings and pay an increased fee but are entitled to no other benefits

We hope you are pleased with the new meeting fees, the quality of education we are providing, and the direction that your chapter is taking.  Next month I will outline more of the changes that are being implemented.

ICF-Long Island Chapter

          I want to wish all ICF-Long Island Chapter members a happy and healthy 2015.  This is the first of regular letters in which I plan to share what’s happening in our chapter.  

As you may know, we have recently changed our name, and I wanted to be sure that you understood why your board decided to become more closely aligned with ICF Global.

          The coaching profession is growing rapidly not just in the U.S. but around the world.  The International Coach Federation (ICF), the Gold Standard in the coaching profession globally, has long been dedicated to maintaining high and consistent professional standards of competency and ethics in the coaching profession.  Recently, ICF Global announced new requirements in order for local chapters to continue to be affiliated with and supported by ICF Global.   After careful consideration, the ICF-LI Board decided to more closely align itself with ICF Global for the following key reasons:

1. ICF Global has a strong commitment to maintaining high, consistent professional standards of competency and ethics in the coaching profession.  Recognition of this self-regulation and ICF’s stringent credentialing standards elevates the credibility of our profession in the communities we serve, whether we are business-related coaches or focus on life coaching specialties.
2. ICF Global provides educational and developmental opportunities that enable our coaches to continue to learn and grow.  In addition, going forward, only chapters that adopt this new affiliation with ICF Global can continue to provide ICF continuing education credits for the programs that we currently offer, a benefit that our membership finds valuable.
3. ICF Global provides its affiliated chapters with resources and research to help us educate the public about what coaching is and the reasonable expectations that it provides.  This elevates the status of coaches as helping professionals within our community.
